Upholstering the Antique Chair, Saturday 24th May 2025.

  • This is a one day onsite course designed to give participants the necessary skills to re upholster their own antique chairs using traditional methods.
  • The course will be delivered by George and Maggy in their own workshop in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere
  • The course is open to all levels, beginners, and professionals.
  • Participant numbers are limited to ensure that learners have the best opportunity to learn  under George’s guidance.
  • Participants are encouraged to bring a small chair or a stool to work on if they desire.

 

The day includes;

 

  • An overview of traditional upholstery, understanding the different components and how they work together to create the desired contour of the seat
  • A look at the tools and materials that will be needed to tackle most jobs
  • How to strip out old chairs, what to save, what to dump , removing old tacks and staples
  • How not to damage and bruise the frame , and how to work with rotten and missing areas
  • How to web seats, apply hessian layers, re instate old horsehair seats, create new ones, how and when to use dacron, flock and fibre fill.
  • Stitching, edges, and seats.
  • How to apply the finishing fabric.
  • Gimp and studs

 

 

Tea, coffee and lunch provided. Maybe a cake or even buns.

 

 

This very popular one day course will give you all the skills you need to re upholster your own antique chairs.
The day includes lunch, tea and coffee, a biscuit or 2 and maybe light relief enjoying the garden.
