Sat 29th February 2020; Antique Furniture Restoration Course; 10.00am-5.00pm
This one day course will introduce you to a wide range of skills necessary to restore and care for your antiques. On the day you will learn how to identify different timbers, treat pieces for woodworm, recognize different finishes and how to strip them off if necessary, how to prepare the timber for a new finish, infilling the grain, and how to use different stains, including French Polishing and wax finishing. We will also show you how to remove water and alcohol stains, and how to correctly and sympathetically clean and enhance your antiques. Futhermore you will be shown how to assess each piece of furniture for restoration, paying particular attention to the joints, this will include gluing and clamping, stabilizing splits, and cracks, and repairing and reinstating lifting and missing veneers.
Each participant is encouraged to bring a small piece of furniture with them on the day.
